Abid Ali gave the cricketing world some nervous moments when he walked off the field. During the Quaid-e-Azam match between Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Karachi, Abid Ali was batting on 61 in the second innings for Central Punjab. However, he complained of chest pain and was taken to the hospital on an emergency basis. Abid Ali was batting on 61, having fallen for 4 in the first innings. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won the match by 244 runs but all the attention was on the well-being of Abid Ali.

Later, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) statement revealed that Abid Ali was diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome. This is most often caused by plaque rupture or clot formation in the heart’s arteries. Symptoms may include heart attack-like chest pressure, chest pressure while resting or doing light activity, or sudden heart stoppage.

The statement by the PCB stated, “He was taken immediately to a cardiac hospital where he was diagnosed as a case of acute coronary syndrome. He is under the care of the consultant cardiologist who is liaising with the PCB medical team regarding further treatment. Currently, he is stable. Abid Ali reassures Fans

In a video message released by Abid Ali, he stated that he was going to have angioplasty surgery on Thursday. He requested the fans to pray for his speedy recovery. According to the latest media reports, a stent has been placed in Abid Ali’s blocked coronary artery.

Abid Ali has had a great start to his cricket career ever since he made his debut in 2019. The right-hander had to slog in the Quaid-e-Azam domestic circuit for over a decade, scoring over 7000 runs. In his first two Tests against Sri Lanka, he scored 109 on debut in Rawalpindi and smashed 174 in Karachi. In 2021, he smashed a double century against Zimbabwe in Harare. During the series against Bangladesh, he hit 133 and 91 in the Test in Chattogram.

With 695 runs at an average of close to 50 in 2021, Abid Ali has been Pakistan’s Mr. Consistent in the top order. In ODIs, he smashed a century against Australia before the World Cup. But, he did not make it to the World Cup squad. At that time, the chairman of selectors Inzamam-ul-Haq remarked it was not easy. “Dropping Abid Ali [to make way for Asif’s selection] was a very difficult decision. But we needed a power-hitter at number 6 or 7. Asif has done very well for us in this England series so we need him,” Inzamam said.
