Hailing from Nizamabad in the heart of Telangana, Nikhat Zareen has etched her name in the history of boxing as a double-world champion. Born to Mohammad Jameel Ahmed and Parveen Sultana on June 14, 1996, Nikhat’s early schooling was at Nirmala Hrudaya Girls High School. She pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree at AV College, Hyderabad. Besides her boxing career, she has been a staff officer at the Bank of India since June 2021.
It was Nikhat’s father who introduced her to boxing. Under his watchful eyes, she trained for a year. She further honed her skills at the Sports Authority of India in Visakhapatnam, mentored by the renowned Dronacharya awardee, IV Rao, since 2009. Her abilities were seen when she was crowned the ‘golden best boxer’ at the Erode Nationals in 2010, which was just the beginning for the young boxer.
In 2011, Nikhat showcased her talent on the international stage and secured a gold medal in the flyweight division at the AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championship in Turkey, defeating Ulku Demir. She earned a silver medal at the Youth World Boxing Championship and a gold at the third Nations Cup International Boxing Tournament, both in 2014. Nikhat triumphed over Russian opponent Paltceva Ekaterina in the 51 kg weight category in Serbia.
She clinched gold at the 16th Senior Women’s National Boxing Championship in Assam in 2015. Her victories in international tournaments in Bangkok and Sofia in 2019 further solidified her status in the boxing world. In 2022, she defeated three-time European Championships medallist Tetiana Kob at the 73rd Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament in Bulgaria, under the guidance of coach Bhaskar Bhatt.
Nikhat collected the gold medal in the 52 kg category at the Women’s World Championship in Istanbul in 2022 and joined the illustrious list of Indian women boxers like Mary Kom, Laishram Sarita Devi, Jenny R. L., and Lekha K. C. to win a gold at the World Championships. At the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, she brought glory to India and clinched the third gold medal for the country in the light flyweight category, by defeating Carly McNaul of Northern Ireland. In 2023, her winning streak continued as she became the world champion for the second time, winning the gold medal in New Delhi, and defeating Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam.
