A sporting career is one of the most precarious and scary careers that parents fear. This is a result of the lack of financial stability in this field. However, the individual brilliance and hard work of Nikhat Zareen can be a detrimental example to change this perception. On Thursday, the Chief Minister of Telangana K. Chandrashekhar Rao announced a cash award of 2 crore to the two-time women’s World Boxing champion to aid her Olympic preparations that will be held in Paris in 2024.

Nikhat Zareen got the talent of boxing from her family itself. It was her dad who germinated this interest in boxing. Nikhat was then inducted into the famous Sports Authority of India (SAI) under the tutelage of the famous Dronacharya awardee, IV Rao in the year 2009. A year later, she was declared as the ‘golden best boxer’ at the Erode nationals.

Accomplishments of Nikhat Zareen

Nikhat is a two-time world champion. Additionally, she also won a gold medal at the 2011 AIBA Women’s Youth and Junior World Boxing Championships held in Antalya. She won the first world championship in Turkey by defeating Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the flyweight finals in Istanbul. Her second win came on her home turf in New Delhi where she defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam in the light flyweight category. Zareen also brought laurels for her country at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 which took place in Birmingham. At the 2022 CWG, she put up a dominant fight against Carly McNaul from Northern Ireland to pin her down 5-0 in the light flyweight category.

Why was Nikhat Zareen rewarded with the cash prize?

The Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekar Rao, expressed his belief with great optimism that Nikhat Zareen will secure a coveted gold medal at the Olympic Games and bring honor not only to Telangana but to the entire nation. During Nikhat’s visit to the State Secretariat, the boxing champion met with CM, where he pledged unwavering support from the state government to ensure her readiness for the prestigious global event scheduled to be held in Paris. The endowment covered Nikhat’s training, travel and other associated expenses that she will incur during her training period. The CM wished Zareen, expressing hope that she would enhance the prestige of the state and the country by winning the gold medal at the next Olympics. Besides financial endowments for her Olympics preparations, Zareen also has been appointed as the staff officer in the Bank of India, zonal office at AC Guards since June 2021.
