India’s Mohammad Hussamuddin, a world championships bronze medallist, was eliminated from the first World Boxing Qualification Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Indian pugilist crashed out after losing his round of 32 match in Busto Arsizio, Italy on Saturday.

Earlier, Indian pugilists Deepak Bhoria (51kg) and Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal (+92kg) lost their respective round of 64 bouts in the first World Olympic. Bhoria exited after suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat to two-time European under-22 champion Nijat Huseynov of Azerbaijan.

Later, Berwal lost 5-0 to 2022 European champion Nelvie Tiafack of Germany. Tiafack dominated throughout the bout against Berwal, who conceded a point after being warned.

Competing in the men’s 57kg, the Indian boxer lost 4-0 to the 22-year-old Jude Gallagher of Ireland. The 30-year-old Hussamuddin, a two-time CWG bronze medallist, was handed a bye in the first round.

With his exit, Nishant Dev remains the only Indian to remain in contention to bag an Olympic quota for the country. A total of nine Indian boxers participated at the Busto Arsizio meet.

Nishant Dev, also a world championships bronze medallist, will be in action in his round of 16 match in the men’s 71kg category late on Sunday.

The first World Olympic boxing qualification tournament is hosting over 590 boxers and will offer a total of 49 quotas, including 28 for men and 21 for women, at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The weight divisions will have four quotas on offer, except for women’s 57kg (two quotas) and women’s 60kg (three quotas).

Women’s boxers Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) obtained the quotas for India at the Asian Games last year. Each country can obtain a maximum of one quota per weight category for the Paris Olympics.
