India finished their campaign with 12 medals at the recently held Asian Boxing Championships 2022 Amman, Jordan. Indian women’s boxing stars Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda, Saweety Boora, and Alfiya Pathan shone bright in the women’s finals and took home gold medals. Kazakhstan topped the team standings with a total of 21 medals, out of which six were gold. Uzbekistan and India secured second and third place at the championships.

Lovlina Borgohain was fighting in her maiden final after winning bronze medals in the 2017 and 2021 Asian Boxing Championships. Ruzmetova Sokhiba of Uzbekistan won her second straight silver medal. In the women’s 81kg, Kazakhstan’s Gulsaya Yerzhan was defeated by Saweety who had won bronze in 2014 and silver in 2015 previously at the Asian Championships. In women’s 63 kg, Parveen defeated Kito Mai of Japan 5-0 to win her maiden Asian medal. Alfiya Pathan gave India their fourth gold medal in the women’s 81+kg event after Jordan’s Islam Husaili, her final opponent, was disqualified by the judges in the first round.

Shiva Thapa had to settle for silver in the men’s 63.5kg division after injuring his right knee midway through, causing the referee to call a halt to the competition (RSC) and declare Ruslan Abdullaev the winner.  Shiva Thapa became the most accomplished boxer in the history of the Asian boxing championships with the silver, his sixth medal in the continental tournament despite the defeat. Minakshi, on her debut, finished with a silver medal in the women’s 52kg after losing 4-1 to Japan’s Youth World Championships 2017 bronze winner Kinoshita Rinka.
