Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain and seasoned pugilist Shiva Thapa will lead India’s charge at the Asian Boxing Championships 2022 to be held from November 1 to November 12, 2022, at Amman in Jordan. India is sending a 25-member contingent to Amman for the Asian Boxing Championships, consisting of 13 men and 12 women. The boxers were chosen during the national selection trials in May.

While CWG champion Nitu Ghanghas is recovering from a shoulder ailment, world champion Nikhat Zareen and fellow gold medalist from the Commonwealth Games Amit Panghal decided to take a break owing to a hectic season. Mary Kom, the six-time world champion, recently underwent knee surgery and is presently rehabilitating.

India’s most successful male boxer at the Asian boxing championships with five medals Shiva Thapa will represent the country in the 63.5kg weight division. He has won five medals at the championship to date. Lovlina Borgohain, who is switching from her preferred 69/70kg weight bracket, the division in which she earned the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, to the 75kg weight division will have a very crucial competition in Amman. The 69kg welterweight division has been removed from the Paris 2024 Olympics, compelling the Assam boxer to change weight classes.

The preliminary rounds will be held from November 1, Tuesday to November 4, Friday at 1:00 PM Local Time (3:30 PM Indian Standard Time). While the quarter-finals are scheduled to take place from November 5, Saturday to November 7, Monday at 1:00 PM (Local Time). The women’s and men’s semi-final games will be held on November 9 and 10, respectively. Whereas, the big finals will take place on November 11, Friday (women) and November 12, Saturday (men).
