Talk ‘N Text thrashed Blackwater 106-93 on Friday in the PBA Governors Cup as it returned from its Gilas Pilipinas hiatus. Mikey Williams scored 23 points to lead the Tropang GIGA, including 5 triples. In contrast, Aaron Fuller pulled down 22 rebounds in addition to his 16 points, helping TNT win its third straight game. Gilas veterans Roger Pogoy and Ryan Reyes, who both contributed 16 points, had a significant influence on the Texters as well. The two were among those who recently competed in the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifications on behalf of their country.

On Saturday, July 2, at the Araneta Coliseum, the great San Miguel Beermen flexed their all-around supremacy in the PBA Season 47 Philippine Cup by pulling away late to defeat the struggling Northport Batang Pier 122-106. In just 20 minutes off the bench, recent addition Robbie Herndon tied his career-high with 21 points, and six-time MVP June Mar Fajardo added 21 points on a 9-of-11 shooting effort and 9 rebounds.

Current form

With the win, TNT improved to 5-4 overall, good for a share of sixth place in the rankings. Blackwater suffered its league-worst 29th overall defeat since last year and its 10th consecutive loss in this conference. Shawn Glover was able to bring the Bossing within 85-96, but Williams engineered a 10-6 run for the TNT with 1:29 left to sap Blackwater’s momentum. Jayvee Casio scored 21 points, while Glover ended with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

With little under five minutes remaining in regulation, San Miguel, which had a narrow lead of 92-88 early in the fourth quarter, raised the tempo of its offensive, helped by the play of Herndon and Paul Zamar, and left Northport behind with a stunning 21-point deficit, 111-90. Only in the closing 2:25 of the game did the Batang Pier manage to cut the gap to 100-113 before the balanced Beermen charge put an end to the contest.

Anticipated Winner

While San Miguel took sole possession of the lead with a 6-1 record, Santos’ leadership and Roi Sumang’s 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists were unable to prevent the Batang Pier from slipping to a 2-5 record and it is possible that this time the game may go in their favor.
