New Zealand will take on Lebanon in the FIBA Asia Cup on July 15. Following impressive debuts that ultimately resulted in a successful start for Japan in the FIBA Asia Cup 2022, newcomers Keisei Tominaga and Yuki Kawamura were scarcely troubled by the bright lights of the big stage. The young duo, who were teammates at the U18 Asian Championships in 2018, gave the Akatsuki Five’s second-half breakout the impetus it needed to defeat Kazakhstan at the Istora Senayan, 100-68. A 29-point third-quarter outburst led by Tominaga’s 13 points helped them transform a three-point halftime deficit into a commanding 75-59 lead going into the fourth. During that time, he made three triples.

Kawamura, on the other hand, came close to a double-double as he led the Japanese team to victory by finishing with eight points, eight assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Yuta Watanabe, the highest scorer for the Akatsuki Five with 21 points and eight rebounds, was quite thrilled to see the young kids stand up. Tominaga and Kawamura’s performances, however, didn’t surprise Japan’s head coach Tom Hovasse because he is familiar with their strengths from their recent World Cup Qualifiers games.

Tominaga helped Japan split its games against Australia (52-98) and Chinese Taipei by averaging 17.5 points in each contest (89-49). In contrast, Kawamura demonstrated both his offensive skill with eight assists and his defensive brilliance with five thefts versus the Taiwanese. Yuki Togashi himself, who is only a few inches taller than Kawamura, also spoke praises for the man. With all of that, Hovasse anticipates greater things from the two in the future as they start to take shape as possible essential components of the scheme.
