The New Zealand Breakers will go against Tasmania JackJumpers in the NBL Australia match on October 7 at Spark Arena (Auckland). There are some players in the NBL who, given the chance, will take over a game. The new-look Xavier Rathan-Mayes, a new signing for Melbourne United, fits this description, according to the New Zealand Breakers. The Breakers lost to Melbourne 101-97 in overtime in their opening game of the season. Melbourne’s all-around guard Rathan-Mayes helped the home team win with 33 points. Among those scores were two significant three-pointers made in overtime; however, it was fortunate the officials did not challenge one of them since replays revealed it was not released prior to the shot clock expiring. The Breakers entered the game with the odds stacked against them; they had suffered the wooden spoon the previous season and had dropped their past seven games versus Melbourne.
However, the New Zealand team played well throughout the match. Dererk Pardon, an import big man, was effectively used in pick-and-roll situations, rebounded well, hustled on both ends, and purposefully attacked the hoop to earn trips to the foul line. While Will McDowell-White successfully managed the offense, fellow import Barry Brown Jr. scored 10 of the Breakers’ first 15 points and troubled defenders in one-on-one situations. Coach Mody Maor had stated before the season began that he wanted the Breakers’ defense to take the lead. Against Melbourne, there was a lot to appreciate about that end, but there were a few times when defensive mistakes or poor rotations allowed Melbourne to find wide-open chances from beyond the arc.
