Mongolia will take on Slovakia at Main Court, Bucharest, Romania in the FIBA U23 World Cup game on October 5. Japan is starting to catch up, but Mongolia continues to set the standard for Asian nations in 3×3 basketball. In the FIBA 3×3 World Tour, Mongolia’s top team, Ulaanbaatar, is rated eighth, and the nation as a whole is ranked fourth. The Philippines has been catching up to Mongolia, and lately, the Cebu Chooks team on the World Tour rose to No. 25. Meanwhile, two of Japan’s teams have enjoyed acceptable World Tour results. These two teams, the Utsunomiya Brex and the Saitama Alphas will compete in the Chooks-to-Go FIBA 3×3 World Tour Cebu Masters on October 1-2 at SM Seaside City Cebu.

Utsunomiya Brex rated 28th overall, is the highest-ranked Japanese team in the globe. In the Utsunomiya Masters, which the team hosted in May, the Utsunomiya Brex came very close to defeating both Sakiai of Lithuania, the sixth-ranked team in the world, and Liman of Serbia, the second-ranked team in the world. Utsunomiya finished seventh overall. In the Ulaanbaatar Challenger, the team finished ninth. Their two best finishes on the 3×3 circuit were the fifth position at the Energy Sukhbaatar Challenger and sixth place at the Penang Challenger.

The flag bearers for the Utsunomiya Brex are Japanese veterans Yosuke Saito, who is 6 feet 1 inch tall and ranked 166th in the world, and Yasui Iijima, who is 6 feet 2 inches tall. The group of outstanding Serbian reinforcements is completed by six-foot-four Dusan Popovic, who is ranked 117th in the world, and six-foot-four Dusan Samardzic, who is ranked 107th. Samardzic was the star performer for the Serbian national team, who finished third in the FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup.
