Kazakhstan will take on Iran in the FIBA Asia Cup on July 15. When told that he was competing in his eighth consecutive FIBA Asia Cup, even Hamed Haddadi struggled to believe it. His participation in the continental tournament dates back to the 2005 edition in Qatar when he was 37 years old. Haddadi and Iran won three gold medals in those eight competitions, including back-to-back victories in 2007 and 2009, becoming the first team to do so since China’s four-peat from 1999 to 2005. They might have won four titles in total, but in 2017 they were beaten by the then-unknown Australia, who won the championship game 79-56. After that heartbreaking loss, it is undoubtedly the desire to return to the top, but according to Haddadi, it is easier said than done given that Iran is now competing in the Asia Cup and is grouped with Syria, Kazakhstan, and Japan in “a tough, terrible group.” However, Iran was able to pass their first test, defeating Syria, 80-67, on Wednesday night to give their campaign a successful start.

Even better, Haddadi reached a significant milestone. He scored 11 points overall, giving him a total of more than 800 Asia Cup points in his career. But the renowned center, who was always a team player, gave most of the credit to his teammates. Haddadi has watched generations of Team Melli talent come and go, and he is now eager for the younger members of the team because of what they will all be able to learn from the Asia Cup as they work to continue the winning legacy. Will he ever appear in the Asia Cup for a tenth time, though?
