In seven attempts, Serbia’s men won the FIBA 33 World Cup championship on Sunday, June 26 in Antwerp, Belgium. France’s women were the first team to win the competition. After being surprised by ROC in the Tokyo 2020 quarterfinals the year before and taking bronze, the Serbs overcame Lithuania 21-16 in the championship game thanks to a game-winning free shot by Dejan Majstorovic, the competition’s MVP. In the women’s final, France defeated Canada 16-13 to improve upon their silver medal from the opening tournament in 2012. A repeat of the Europe Cup final from the previous September took place in the men’s championship game, which Serbia handily won. A repeat seemed certain when the reigning champions surged out to an early 7-1 lead.

Current Form

The Serbs survived a small scare when they defeated the host Belgium in the semi-finals, 17-12, despite falling down 9-6. They had just defeated the defending Olympic champions, Latvia, 22-17 in the quarterfinals. After an exciting semifinal game against France, Lithuania won 18-17 in extra time. With 2:30 left, Antoine Eito of France, who had been clutching his left ankle as he crumpled in agony, managed to return to his feet and hit a two-pointer to give his side a 14-13 lead. 16-16 was the final score after regulation, and due to a foul on Sam Van, Nastia Claessens had a chance to win it with two free throws early in overtime. After Cavaliere made the first, Gintautas Matulis made a steal and then scored to tie the game.

Anticipated Winner

Egypt’s initial match was defeated 19-6 against the hosts Belgium, who had complete control of the game. The fact that Belgium needs one of the top three spots to advance in the competition means that they still have a good chance of qualifying despite this. Belgium will next play both Poland and Mongolia, and a win might be enough for the team to go to the knockout stages.
