Bahrain will take on China in the FIBA Asia Cup on July 14. The victory is the second-largest triumph over their opponents ever for Korea and the biggest against China in a FIBA competition since 1997. Korea last defeated China by this much of a margin at the 1997 Asia Cup, when they also won their last Asia Cup championship. In his Asia Cup debut, Ra Guna led the way for Korea, scoring 25 points, pulling down 14 rebounds, dishing out three assists, and making three three-pointers. Heo Hoon (15 points, 6 assists) and Kang Sang Jae (13 points) each hit crucial baskets late in the game, and their baskets put the game out of reach. Gu Quan led China’s scoring with 22 points and 5 rebounds during their limited rotation game. While Sun Minghui filled the stat sheet with 14 points on 5-10 shooting, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists before fouling out, Zhao Rui also contributed 20 points.

With six minutes left in the third quarter, the game was far from finished, but Ra GunA’s assurance after making a three-pointer and getting a foul on a made basket in quick succession gave the impression that it was. While China never allowed the score to get out of hand, the three-pointer gave Korea the advantage for good. From that point on, it was obvious that Korea had the upper hand. Along with being the team’s top scorer, rebounder, and maker of the game-winning shot for Korea, Ra excelled on defense against China’s big men. Ra only committed one foul in a game this physical, and he participated in all but three minutes of it. Given the number of big guys they have in their talent pool, China doesn’t frequently lose in the paint.
