Ashwini and Karan got engaged in October 2017 while the wedding was held by Kodava Customs in December 2017.
Ashwini Ponnappa was born on September 18, 1989, in Bangalore, Karnataka. She started playing badminton at eight years old, and at 14, she enrolled in the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy. In her international debut in 2006, Ponnappa played women’s doubles with Jwala Gutta and mixed doubles with V. Diju. She teamed up with Gutta successfully, and in 2010 they became the first Indian women’s doubles team to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. After a disappointing showing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Ashwini Ponnappa and Gutta decided to part ways. Then, in women’s doubles and mixed doubles, she partnered with N. Sikki Reddy and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.
Ashwini Ponnappa rose to prominence after her performances with Jwala Gutta at the 2010 Commonwealth Games won her a gold medal. When they won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2011, they also made history by becoming the first Indian pair to take home a medal. Additionally, they qualified for the Olympics in 2012 and 2016 but failed to bring home any awards. When Ashwini Ponnappa qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 with N. Sikki Reddy, she became one of the few Indian athletes to qualify for three consecutive Olympics. Together with Reddy, she also took home a silver medal from the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the South Asian Games, she came away with three awards. Additionally, she took home a gold medal from the 2017 Asia Mixed Team Championships.
Karan Medappa is a model as well as a businessman by profession. He is the founder of a sports marketing PR and events company called Blue Degree Advisors. At 6 feet and 65 kg, Medappa’s wiry and taut frame has graced him in fashion walks across the country. He’s been a top model for the past few years before which he was a competitive tennis player. While cherishing his tennis career, he remarks “My best ranking was 58 in India in Under 16. I used to travel a lot for tournaments across the country.” The two reportedly got engaged in October 2017, and the wedding was held by Kodava Customs, in December 2017.
Ashwini Ponappa and Karan Medappa don’t have a child as of yet.
Karan Medappa is a model and businessman. Indian badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa tied the knot with Karan, her long-time boyfriend, in a traditional ceremony held in Coorg in 2017. The wedding reception of Ashwini and Medappa was held in Virajpet which is a town in the Karnataka province of Kodagu. Ashwini wore a customary Kodava saree, and Medappa wore a ‘Kuppasa Datti’-style traditional dress. Ashwini later clarified that she would keep playing the sport after marriage when she announced her engagement earlier this year. Squash player Jyotsna Chinnappa and tennis player Rohan Bopanna from India attended the wedding.
