India's Squad announced for Sudirman Cup 2023; find out here

The Sudirman Cup is a biannual mixed-team badminton tournament. 16 teams will compete in the 18th edition of the tournament

The Indian badminton team will compete in the Sudirman Cup 2023, which will take place in Suzhou, China from May 14 to May 21, under the lead of two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and world No. 9 HS Prannoy. Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap, two badminton players from India, were not selected for the team. India was placed in Group C with Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, and Australia. Their first challenge will be to advance from a potentially challenging pool to the knockout stage.

Women athletes

At the Madrid Spain Masters 2023, PV Sindhu recently advanced to the women’s singles final before falling to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia. After a protracted injury layoff, former world champion PV Sindhu returned to the court in 2023 after winning the women’s singles gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Before making it to the second round of the Swiss Open. Sindhu lost in the first round of the Malaysian Open, the India Open, and the All-England Championships.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, a player for India’s men’s doubles team who withdrew from the Madrid Spain Masters 2023 due to injury, will help the team with his return. Last month, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty took home the doubles title at the Swiss Open 2023. As a backup for Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, a women’s doubles team that advanced to the All England Open 2023 semifinals, Ashwini Ponnappa, and partner Tanisha Castro will be playing in the women’s doubles.

Other players to be part

The other single players on the team will be Kidambi Srikanth and Anupama Upadhyaya, the current senior national women’s singles champion. Lakshya Sen, a champion at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, will play men’s singles as a reserve for the group. By winning the Thomas Cup the previous year, the Indian men’s team made history. Additionally, earlier this year, India won the bronze medal at the Asian Mixed Team Championships. Established in 1989, the Sudirman Cup is a biannual mixed-team badminton tournament. 16 teams will compete in the 18th edition of the tournament. The teams will be split up into four groups, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the knockout round.
