The World Athletics U-20 Championships is set to begin in Santiago de Cali, Colombia from Mon, 1 Aug, 2022 – Sat, 6 Aug, 2022. India is fielding a 37-athlete team, where the country’s budding athletes aim to break out with glittering performances making a name on the global stage. The event is set to receive more than 1500 athletes from all over the world.
Only four Indians have managed podium finishes at the event, which includes Neeraj Chopra, who won India their first gold in the competition. The list also includes Hima Das, who won gold in 2018, Seema Punia and Navjeet Kaur Dhillon with a bronze. Recently, India’s Mixed relay team helped India to their first ever medal at the event finishing 3rd.
India’s Shaili Singh, who won a silver medal in Nairobi in 2021, has failed to recover from a fractured toe and will miss the event. Upcoming quarter-miler Priya Mohan is one of the front runners to bring home more silverware this year.
The tournament comes immediately after the senior Championships, which took place in Oregon. Chopra scripted further history winning a silver in the Javelin throw continuing his remarkable run. The World Athletics U20 Championships moves to Colombia, just one year after the event in Nairobi, Kenya.
