Chopra topped Group A with his massive throw but Grenada’s Anderson Peters recorded the best throw at 89.91m in the qualifiers. The duo went head-to-head after their last meeting at the Diamond League recently where Peters had finished ahead of the ace Indian javelin thrower.
Peters and Chopra were the only throw track and field athletes to secure the automatic qualification mark while the rest qualified after having finished in the top 12. The young Indian sensation Rohit Yadav also qualified for the final event with a throw of 80.42 which helped him finish at the 11th spot.
Chopra had entered the Worlds after setting a new National Record at 89.94m at the Diamond League last month. “It was a good start. I’ll give my 100% in the final,” Chopra said after the qualifying round.” There is a little bit of zigzag in my run-up. I shook a little bit, but it was a good throw,” he said about his throw.
