The Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2022 will be held on October 9, 2022, at Sofia in Bulgaria. Since 1983, Sofia, Bulgaria, has hosted the Sofia Marathon annually. The previous edition (2021) of the marathon was won by Kenya’s Duncan Koech (Men) and Turkey’s Tubay Erdal (Women). Redouan Nouini (MAR) and Naom Jebet (KEN) hold the meet records, with 2:13:03 secs and 2:28:41 secs. The road running marathon didn’t take place from 2009 to 2011 due to infrastructural issues.
The marathon starts and ends in front of the National Art Gallery on Battenberg Square. It consists of two loops, each of which half marathoners run once. The route briefly turns to the west before heading to the north on Maria Luiza Boulevard. The marathon comes to a halt shortly after passing Lions’ Bridge and goes south, past St Nedelya Church. After passing the CourtHouse on Vitosha Boulevard, runners turn east until they reach Georgi Rakovski Street, then northeast to Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard. Marathoners then proceed southeast along the avenue past the National Assembly before turning north onto Vasil Levski Boulevard in front of Sofia University.
The race then comprises a 15-kilometer (9-mile) out-and-back section that mostly follows Knyaz Aleksandar Dondukov Boulevard, Vladimir Vazov Boulevard, and Botevgrad Highway, with a turnaround point near the city’s northeastern outskirts, past the airport. Following a return to Vasil Levski Boulevard in the city center, participants turn west and run through Alexander Nevsky Cathedral before returning to Battenberg Square to complete the half marathon loop.
