Sydney McLaughlin was destined to be an athlete from birth. Her father Willie McLaughlin, a three-time All-American, is a member of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame. At the 1984 Olympic Trials, he was a semi-finalist in the 400 meters. Her mother, Mary Neumeister McLaughlin, ran on the boys’ team at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Tonawanda, New York, and was a 2:12 half-miler. In addition to academic success, McLaughlin began running at a young age.
She was the World Youth Champion in 2015 as a 15-year-old. McLaughlin was the youngest athlete since 1980 to qualify for the US Olympic track squad in 2016, finishing third in the US Olympic Trials with the current world under-18 best of 54.15 seconds, which was also the global U20 record at the time. She set her junior personal best of 52.75s (not ratified) in 2018 and currently owns the world U20 record with a time of 53.60 seconds. She is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, holding the Games record, and the 2022 World champion, owning the current world record of 50.68 seconds, in the Women’s 400m Hurdles.
