At the 2023 Chemist Warehouse Australian Junior Athletics Championships, the 15-year-old Australian sprinter, Gout, made to the headlines by smashing the Australian Under 18 200m record. Gout won the competition at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre in a timing of 20.87 seconds, about half a second faster than his rivals. In addition, this was his seventh time qualifying for the Commonwealth Youth Games in the 200 meter distance.

Notably, the Australian sprinter finished his record-breaking run with a -0.1 headwind. Usain Bolt who is known as the greatest athlete of all time established a record for the fastest time over 200 meters at age 15 in 20.58 seconds with a +1.4 tailwind. Comparisons to Bolt have also been made in light of Gout’s outstanding performance. Gout’s run puts him within a tenth of a second behind Bolt’s 200-meter time at the same age after taking into consideration the wind factor.

What Gout had to say post his victory

“It means a lot because I’ve been training so much for this. I was really nervous. The gun went, and I was good and I just kept pushing, ” said the Australian sprinter. He added, “It’s like you can’t feel any ground contact, it feels like you are floating. This season has been mind blowing for me. Last year I came fourth and sixth at Nationals, and then I came out at All Schools and won. I was really motivated because I took last year personally, it always feels better when you are winning,” Gout said. “Di [Diane Sheppard] is the best coach ever, I love her, and my training group are the best supporters ever – I couldn’t get here without them, ” he said to Athletics Australia regarding his coach.
