Dalilah Muhammad was born on February 7, 1990. She is a 400-meter hurdles expert and an American track and field athlete. She won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and the silver at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where she also set a personal record of 51.58 seconds, making her the second-fastest woman ever in the event.
Muhammad, who finished in second place at the 2013 and 2017 World Championships, won her first gold in 2019 and shattered the previous record of 52.16 seconds for the 400-meter hurdles. She was only the second female 400-meter hurdles in history—behind Sally Gunnell—to have accomplished this feat. She also won gold as a member of the women’s 4*400-meter relay team at the Tokyo Games and the 2019 World Championships.
Muhammad finished second in the 400 m hurdles at the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships after winning the event at the 2007 World Youth Championships. She competed for the USC Trojans as a collegiate runner, earning four All-American honors for them at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Along with winning the Diamond League twice, she was also the American national champion in 2013, 2016, and 2017.
Dalilah Muhammad participated in a variety of track and field competitions in high school, including the hurdles, sprints, and high jump. Muhammad improved Yuliya Pechonkina’s 16-year-old record of 52.34 seconds (2003) at the 2019 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships by breaking the 400-meter hurdles world record in a time of 52.20 seconds. After Sally Gunnell, Muhammad is the only other woman in 400m hurdles history to have won the Olympic title and broken the world record. Muhammad’s time was approved as the official world record by the IAAF in September. She improved her time by 0.04 seconds and set a new world record at the 2019 World Championships with a time of 52.16 seconds. She was awarded the gold medal.
