Anita Wlodarczyk was born on August 8, 1985, in Rawicz, Poland. She is a Polish athlete who has won three Olympic gold medals (2012, 2016, and 2020), four world championships, and numerous world records in the hammer throw (as of 2021), in addition to being the national and European champion. She is a physical education major with a bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Physical Education. Since the sport was added to the Olympics in 2000, Anita is the only woman with multiple Olympic gold medals in it. She established the record for the longest hammer throw in history at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio when she threw it 82.29 meters. Only one other woman, Zhang Wenxiu of China, has won at least three medals in the competition.

Anita achieved her first U-23 national championship victory back in 2007 and hasn’t looked back since. She competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and placed sixth. She later went on to win her first gold medal at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, setting a new world record throw of 77.9 meters. Anita also won bronze at the 2010 World Championships to go along with her four gold medals.

Anita took home a silver medal in the hammer throw at the London Olympics in 2012, but in October 2019, she was promoted to the gold medal position after Tatyana Lysenko of the Russian Federation was disqualified for anti-doping violations. She put her dream on hold in 2021 by placing last in the women’s throw at the Tokyo Olympics. Her dream came true when she won a gold medal for the third time at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She covered 78.48 meters.

Over the course of her career, she has been extremely prone to injuries. In July 2019, she underwent keyhole surgery for a knee problem, preventing her from competing in the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar. She went back to work at the beginning of 2020. Early in 2014, she suffered a left knee injury at a training camp in the US, which caused her to miss seven weeks of training. After being sidelined due to injury for nine months, she resumed work in June 2011. At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany, she twisted her left ankle while taking pleasure in her throw. Despite having to undergo surgeries and missing two months of practice, she still managed to win the gold medal with her throw.
