German track and field athlete Malaika Mihambo is the reigning Olympic and world champion in the long jump event. After winning the 2019 competition with a personal best jump of 7.30 meters, she successfully defended her World Championships title in 2022. She jumped 7.03 meters at the 2022 European Championships in Munich, however due to her poor health, she only took home a silver medal. She had previously captured both the bronze medal in 2016 and the European Championship title in 2018. Ulrich Knapp is currently coaching Malaika. Ulrich won Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading Malaika to gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
After winning the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships (now known as the World Athletics Championships), she started working with children by teaching sports and games session at the primary school she had attended. She created an internet project during the coronavirus pandemic that allowed her to give many children opportunities through video training sessions and aid them in understanding the situation. She also established Malaikas Herzrprung, her own foundation, to encourage young people to participate in athletics. The organization strives to promote the social and athletic growth of primary school students in addition to eliminating financial obstacles.
She was born in Heidelberg, Germany, to Petra Mihambo-Fichtner, a German mother, and her Tanzanian father. In the town of Oftersheim, she received her upbringing and education. Mihambo received a sports scholarship to study political science at the University of Mannheim and graduated in 2016. While pursuing her postgraduate master’s degree in environmental sciences at the University of Hagen, she took part in a community project for kids. She has won the following awards: Athlete of Hearts 2021, Sportsman of the Year 2021, Sportsman of the Year in Difficult Times 2020, and Sportsman of the Year 2019 for her accomplishments.
