One of the brightest sportsmen on the rise is Kristjan Čeh. He is the current World Champion after taking home the gold in the men’s discus throw in the Eugene, Oregon-hosted World Championships in 2022. A week later, he maintained his peak form by earning silver at the European Athletics Championships in Munich. He competed for his nation in the 2019 World Athletics Championships but was unable to make it to the final. He won the gold medal at the European U23 Championships earlier that year in Gävle, Sweden. On May 21, 2022, at the Birmingham Diamond League, he set a personal record of 71.27.
At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, his first appearance in the Summer Olympic Games, he finished fifth with a throw of 66.62 m in the finals. Keeping in mind his last season’s best which was 70.35 in Mortuary, one could say that it was decent. But considering the incident that happened with his previous coach Gorazd Rajher right before the Olympics, the performance was definitely a good one. On being asked in an interview if he was happy with his performance, he replied, “Of course I had stress before Tokyo, but I was just trying to focus on the races. And I did just fine. You can always do things better, but I’m pretty happy instead of a fifth. They were the first Olympics of my career.”
Although he has won only one major tournament, he is a two-time junior U23 European champion. It might look as if there is a long way to go for Kristjan Čeh. But the way he has seen progress under his new coach, Gerd Kanter, the Olympic champion discus thrower, that day isn’t far when Čeh is going to rule the World of Athletics. The 23-year-old’s personal best throw of 71.27 already ranks in the top 10 of the all-time best Discus throws.
