Bol stunned the world by winning both of her races in Munich after deciding to compete in the 400m hurdles and 400m.
Femke Bol, nicknamed “Bambi” for the way she smoothly navigates the hurdles, travelled to Germany for the European Championships after winning silver at the World Athletics Championships 2022. Bol stunned the world by winning both of her races in Munich after deciding to compete in the 400m hurdles and 400m flat, becoming the first woman to ever complete the double at a major competition. She didn’t stop there, though. She completed the meet by winning the anchor leg of the 4×400-meter relay to win three gold medals in the competition.
She set a new world record in the non-Olympic 300m hurdles race on May 31 at the Ostrava Golden Spike competition, winning in 36.86 seconds. In addition to breaking the previous record by 1.3 seconds, she became the first woman to ever complete the distance in less than 37 seconds. Her timing of 52.03s in the 400-meter hurdles final in Tokyo last year set a record for a European woman at that distance. Bol’s 400m flat mark of 49.44 in the final of the European Athletics Championships was also a national record.
Bol successfully defended her Diamond League title and set yet another meet record over the barriers in Lausanne after making a comeback to the Diamond Race. She then wrapped up a great third season with a victory in the Zurich final of the circuit. She won 11 of of her 12 hurdles competitions without losing that year, had six personal best times under 53 seconds, and was named the EAA European Female Athlete of the Year.
