Elaine Sandra-Lee Thompson was born on June 28, 1992, in Manchester Parish, Jamaica. She was a good but not an extraordinary scholastic sprinter for Christiana High School and later Manchester High School. Her greatest performance at the Jamaican ISSA Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships was a fourth-place finish in the Class Two 100 metres in 12.01 seconds in 2009. In her final year at Manchester High, she was dismissed from the track team in 2011, owing to disciplinary issues. Paul Francis, the brother of MVP Track Club head coach Stephen Francis, spotted Thompson and recruited her to the University of Technology, Jamaica after high school. Her times began to steadily improve under MVP coaching.

Elaine Thompson made her professional breakthrough in 2013 when she won her first inter-collegiate 100m championship at the Jamaican Inter-Collegiate Championships. She contributed to her country’s relay team winning the 4x100m title that year at the CAC Championships. She claimed the 100-meter gold in 2015 at the Jamaican International Invitational with a time of 10.97 seconds. As a result of which, she rose to prominence and caught the attention of people.  In the same year, she qualified for the World Athletics Championships and won her first national championship in the 200-meter race at the Jamaican Athletics Championships. Elaine captured the 100-meter national championship in 2018 and successfully defended it in the Jamaican Athletics Championships in 2019.

Elaine Thompson made her international debut in 2014 when she helped Jamaica’s relay team win a gold medal in the 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. She was also a member of the relay team that won the 4x100m world championships and the silver medal in the 200m individual at the World Championships. When Elaine competed in her first Olympics in 2016, she quickly rose to popularity as the first female Jamaican sprinter to win a gold medal in both the 100- and 200-meter events. In the 4x100m relay, she assisted her team in taking home the silver medal. At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Elaine stunned the field in one of the best sprint events ever with an Olympic record of 10.61 to keep her 100m title.
