Ernest John Uy Obiena, also known as EJ Obiena, is a world-class Filipino pole vaulter from Tondo, Manila. He is well-known for his accomplishments in Philippine pole vaulting history. Obiena, then 18, broke the national record set by Edward Lasquete’s 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona of 5.0 meters with his 5.01 jump in 2014. This period saw the breaking of the junior national record of 4.31 meters. During the same year, Obiena surpassed his personal record five times: 5.05, 5.05, 5.15, 5.20, and 5.21 meters. He presently holds the national record with a leap of 5.94m that he recorded at the World Championships 2022 in Eugene, Oregon. He also became the first Filipino athlete to win a medal (bronze) in the championships

Obiena was involved in a disagreement with Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA), run by Philip Juico, in November 2021. The dispute was regarding delayed payments to Vitaly Petrov, the coach of Obiena. However, Petrov denied having any financial dispute with Obiena. Philippine Senators promptly defended Obiena, calling unproven allegations and harassment against a national treasure and supporting a motion to recall the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC) budget. The Senators later authorized the PSC budget on the condition that PATAFA will have to correct the grievous harm done to Obiena’s reputation. Witnesses stated during hearings that PATAFA’s payment mechanism was faulty.

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) deemed Philip Juico, the president of PATAFA, persona non grata (an unacceptable person) for his involvement in the harassment of Obiena following an examination by its Ethics Committee. The POC’s ethics committee ended its probe by finding that Juico had harassed the athlete by leveling malevolent public accusations. The Philippine Sports Commission declared on March 30, 2022, that both parties had come to an understanding through the mediation process and in the future competitions, Obiena would receive PATAFA’s support.
