Anita Wlodarczyk is a Polish hammer thrower specialist. For her outstanding sporting accomplishments, she was chosen as the 2016 Polish Sports Personality of the Year and in 2021 was awarded the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Włodarczyk established a new world record on August 22, 2009, in Berlin, Germany, at the World Championships in Athletics with a throw of 77.96 meters (255 ft 9 in). Włodarczyk twisted her left ankle while celebrating, bringing her season to an early end. She competed again at the Meeting Grand Prix IAAF de Dakar in April 2010, easily winning her event with a throw of 75.13 m. She then went on to shatter her previous world record with a 78.30-meter (256.9 ft) hammer throw at the Enea Cup in Bydgoszcz on June 6, 2010.

Włodarczyk came in second place overall for the 2010 IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge season after Betty Heidler and took home the bronze at the 2010 European Athletics Championships. She placed fifth overall at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, finishing outside of the medals. With a throw of 81.08 meters (266.0 feet) on August 1, 2015, Włodarczyk broke the previous record and became the first female to throw the hammer farther than 80 meters (260 feet). She continued to compete and eventually won the gold medal at the World Championships, throwing over 80 meters (260 feet) once more.

To win the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Włodarczyk set a new world record with a throw of 82.29 meters (270.0 ft). Two weeks after the Olympics, on August 28, 2016, at the EAA 7th Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Warsaw, she threw 82.98 meters (272.2 ft), breaking the previous world record.
