Michael Norman is turning his attention from the 400m to the 100m and aiming to compete in the shorter sprint event at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July. At Eugene, three spots for the World Championships Budapest 2023 will be up for grabs. Norman is the reigning world champion, having accomplished the gold medal with a timing of 44.29 in the 400m sprints, at the World Championships 2022. At the championships in Oregon, he also assisted team USA in capturing another gold medal in the 4 X 400 m relay with a time of 2:56.17s.

Norman had a season assessment with Quincy Watts weeks after the World Championships, and he suggested Norman consider the shorter sprint. Watts won two gold medals in the 400m sprint and relay events at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Norman has always been considered a 100m prospect. Due to the postponement of the Olympics and cancellation of other significant meetings in 2020, Norman had the freedom to compete in the 100m. His performance of 9.86 seconds at Fort Worth, Texas, turned out to be the fastest in the world for the entire year. He made an agreement with his then-coach Smith Gilbert before the epidemic that if he won the gold medal in the Olympics in Tokyo, he would switch to the 100-meter event.

Michael Norman’s plans

Without changing his 400m preparation, Normal ran the 9.86 and then broke 10 in each of his three 100m races in 2021 following the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He had to start now, or wait until after the 2024 Summer Olympics, if he wanted to concentrate on the 100m. “If you’re 400m world champion, you don’t get that coveted title of the world’s fastest man. [The 100m] is the race that the world watches. I think the moment’s now”, Norman said in an interview. With Norman’s decision, the current world champions in the 100m (Fred Kerley), 200m (Noah Lyles), and 400m might square off at the global championships. Christian Coleman, the 2019 World champion, and Marvin Bracy-Williams and Trayvon Bromell, the 2022 World silver and bronze medalists, are also in the 100m field.

The 100m, 4x100m, and 4x400m races at the world championships are Norman’s three gold medal targets for this year. He intends to run the 400m at least once before World Championships to strengthen his case for 4x400m relay selectors, though it may not be necessary. Since he is the current world champion in the 400m, he can still compete in the global championships even if he doesn’t make the 100m team. Norman asserts that he will defend his 400-meter championship at the Worlds if things go horribly. He will, however, be competing for a new title if things go his way.
