Commonwealth champion Lindon Victor won the decathlon at the Decastar meeting in Talence by breaking his record with 8550, gaining the overall men’s title in the World Athletics Combined Events Tour on September 18, 2022. In the women’s Decastar heptathlon, Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands and Ivona Dadic of Austria tied for first place, both scoring 6233.

The 29-year-old Victor was second to Germany’s Manuel Eitel in the 100 meters with a wind-assisted 10.61 (3.1 m/s), who won the race in 10.44. He dominated the shot put with a 15.75m throw, nearly a meter longer than any of his competitors. Makenson Gletty of France and Eitel both set personal bests of 14.88 and 14.86 meters, respectively. Victor finished day one by winning his 400-meter heat, with a personal best time of 48.20 to finish third overall behind Germany’s Malik Diakite(47.74) and Gaio(48.19). This gave the Grenadian an overnight score of 4438 and a 128-point advantage over Gaio. On Sunday, With a 4.80m pole vault season’s best and a 66.01m javelin throw, Victor had a lead of nearly 400 points heading into the last round. Diakite won the 1500 meters comprehensively, while Victor ran a personal best of 4:43.74, clinching the overall title.

Two-time Olympian Ivona Dadic began the heptathlon with a time of 13.81 in the 100-meter hurdles, which was won by France’s Esther Turpin in 13.51 ahead of  Tokyo Olympics Bronze medalist Emma Oosterwegel(13.66). In Shot Put, Geraldine Ruckstuhl of Switzerland took the lead with a personal best throw of 14.68 meters, improving on her previous best by 10cm. Dadic finished the 200 meters in 24.11 to finish the day with a total of 3689, which put her 112 points ahead of Salming after the first day of competition. Meanwhile, Oosterwegel was in fifth place, about 200 points behind the leader.

With a long jump distance of 6.01m, Dadic increased her lead in the opening competition of the second day. With a personal best of 5.92m, Oosterwegel moved up to second place overall. However, things changed during the Javelin throw. With a lifetime best throw of 55.47 meters, Oosterwegel took the lead from Dadic (43.92) by nine points. In the final race, the 800m, Dadic knew she needed to finish a stride ahead of Oosterwegel to make up the points she had lost and take back the lead. With a time of 2:11.12 to Oosterwegel 2:11.78, she won the race, but it was ‘only’ enough to tie her with the Dutch all-arounder, who also scored 6233.
