With consecutive gold medal victories in the previous editions of the multi-sport event, Vinesh will be eyeing to complete her hat-trick at the Birmingham 2022.
Vinesh Phogat is considered one of the mega-favorite to win a medal for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022. She will head towards her first major International event since her disappointing performance at Summer Olympics 2020. Vinesh’s international career took a downward curve post the Tokyo Olympics as she was reprimanded by the Wrestling Federation of India and faced a temporary ban based on disciplinary grounds. The wrestler then made herself unavailable from the World Championships trials last year owing to mental health issues.
However, the 27-year-old took part in the selection trials for Commonwealth Games and Senior World Wrestling Championships and got herself back into the mix. In the trials, she moved to the finals without conceding a single point throughout the competition. Although Haryana’s Antim gave a neck-a-neck fight, the Asian Games gold medallist managed to get past her through a critical 3-3 win in the final bout.
Vinesh has a phenomenal record at the Commonwealth Games, with two Gold medal performances under her belt. She secured her first Gold medal win against Yana Rattigan of England in the 48 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2014 held in Glasgow. The wrestler added another Gold to her tally by defeating Canada’s Jessica MacDonald in the 50 kg class at the Gold Coast, 2018. She was the only woman wrestler from India to win Gold at the CWG 2018. With consecutive gold medal victories in previous editions of the multi-sport event, Vinesh will be eyeing to complete her hat-trick at the Birmingham 2022.
