Indian javelin specialist Neeraj Chopra will miss the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England after suffering an injury during the World Athletics Championships. It is believed that the 24-year old suffered a thigh injury during one of his throws, prompting him to withdraw from the quadrennial event this year.

“He (Neeraj Chopra) is not fit as he got injured in the finals of World Athletics Championships. He informed us about this. Neeraj Chopra had called me earlier today from the US to convey his inability to take part in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games owing to fitness concerns “

“Following his participation in the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, he had an MRI scan done on Monday and, based on it, he has been advised a month’s rest by his medical team.” IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said in a statement.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Neeraj Chopra not to defend title

Chopra was slated to enter the tournament as the defending champion after winning the gold in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The unfortunate news comes days after his historic silver in Oregon, where he was narrowly denied by Anderson Peters of Grenada, who took home the Gold.

Chopra managed to record a throw of 88.13m in his fourth throw to become the only second Indian athlete to win a medal at World Athletics Championships after Anju Bobby George’s bronze in 2003. After the win, Chopra revealed that he was in some sort of discomfort after the event. He had said:

“I thought even the fourth throw could have gone farther. After that, I felt something on my thigh and could not do my best in the next two. I had strapping (on the thigh). I will know the status tomorrow morning because my body is still warm after the event. Hope there should not be any issue for the upcoming events, Commonwealth Games.”

However, with his withdrawal Chopra will aim to return in a month’s time missing the Monaco Diamond League in August, but will aim to return by September.
