Indian Women’s Hockey Team started their campaign with a dominant 5-0 win over Ghana. While India’s drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur scored twice, Neha, Sangita, and Salima scored one goal each in the first group match. India will be up against Wales on July 30. However, the Women’s cricket team lost their opening match against Australia by 3 wickets despite Renuka Singh’s 4-wicket haul. Indian shuttlers thrashed Pakistan by 5-0 in the first game of the mixed team event. Pugilist Shiva Thapa stormed into the pre-quarters defeating Pakistan’s Suleman Baloch by 5-0. Indian table tennis team shone the brightest on Day 1 as the women clinched victory against South Africa and Fiji by 3-0 and the men’s team defeated Barbados and Singapore with a comprehensive 3-0 win in both the games. Swimmer Srihari Nataraj qualified for the final of the men’s 100m Backstroke event.
