Eliud Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion, shattered his own world record in the Berlin Marathon on September 25, 2022. He won his 15th marathon of his career out of just 17 races. The Kenyan superstar clocked 2 hours, 1 minute, and 9 seconds, cutting 30 seconds off his earlier best time of 2:01:39. He had attained this timing four years earlier in the same competition in 2018. Kipchoge has now accomplished this feat twice at the Berlin Marathon. The victory at the Germany’s capital is also his second win this year after winning the Tokyo Marathon in March.

Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia recorded the third all-time fastest timing to claim the women’s marathon race on Sunday. She showed tremendous improvement with a record timing of 2:15:37 which is 18 minutes faster than her previous personal best.  Assefa, a Rio 2016 Olympian in the 800m, won her second marathon following a 2:34:01 debut in Riyadh in March. Her victory in Berlin propelled her to third place overall behind Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain and Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei. With a combined time of 4:16:46 from Kipchoge and Assefa, the marathon was completed in the quickest time ever.
