Toni Storm will play Clara Mortensen in the upcoming movie of Mildred Burke called “Queen of the Ring.” Burke, who was admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame’s legacy wing in 2016, started her long and successful career in 1935. She trained with Billy Wolfe, who would later become her husband.
After wrestling at carnivals at first, Burke beat Clara Mortensen to win the Women’s World Championship in January 1937. She kept the title for almost 20 years. After she and Wolfe broke up, Burke would often fight with NWA officials, and when she defended her title against her ex-husband’s daughter-in-law, June Byers, it quickly turned into a fight.
Burke retired in 1956, after starting her own company called the World Women’s Wrestling Association. This group is widely credited with bringing women’s wrestling to Japan and Mexico.
Dave Meltzer recently said in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Charlotte Flair was supposed to play June Byers in the movie before WWE changed their minds:
“Kamille Brickhouse noted that she spent the summer filming the Mildred Burke movie “Queen of the Ring.” She will be playing June Byers, who had a shoot match for the women’s world title in Atlanta with Burke in 1954 and then after winning became the dominant women’s star for the next decade. At one point Charlotte Flair was pegged for that role and had agreed to it but WWE got involved and it fell through.”
Before Toni Storm got the part, there was also talk that Liv Morgan would play the part of Mortensen.
Billy Wolfe will be played by Josh Lucas, who was in Yellowstone. Mildred Burke will be played by Emily Bett Rickards, who is best known for playing Felicity Smoak on The CW’s “Arrow.”
