World Wrestling Championships 2022: Indian women's team announced

Commonwealth Games champion Vinesh Phogat defeated the reigning World U20 gold medallist Antim Panghal in the women’s trials held at the SAI Centre, Lucknow. With this, she booked a ticket to the World Wrestling Championships 2022 in women’s 53kg. Vinesh who faced stiff competition from Antim during the CWG trials got a comprehensive win against the youngster by 7-0. Vinesh was the only woman among the six-member CWG wrestling squad to make it to the World Championships team.

The world’s top-ranked wrestler in 59kg Sarita Mor started her fight for the spot after switching to 57kg. She went on to defeat Lalitha by 4-0 to assure herself a position. Mansi Ahlawat defeated the Worlds bronze medalist Pooja Dhanda 2-0 to claim the 59kg position. Olympian Sonam Malik who recently won silver at the World U-20 Championships defeated Manisha 2-1 to take the 62 kg position. The bronze medallist at Asian Championships Sushma Shokeen beat Pinky to become the final 55kg competitor to earn a spot. 

The World Wrestling Championships 2022 is scheduled to take place from Sep 10 to Sep 18 in Belgrade, Serbia. Earlier, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Bajrang Punia, and Deepak Punia got exempted from selection trials by the Wrestling Federation of India. After training overseas for the World Championships, the trio will join the Indian squad in Serbia. Wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Anshu Malik had pulled out of the trials due to injuries. Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Pooja Sihag opted out of the Worlds due to the demise of her husband to an alleged drug overdose.
