The 45th World U20 Wrestling Championships (U20) started in Sofia, Bulgaria and will end on August 21, 2022. Over 600 talented wrestlers will be participating in the world championships. The competition contains three categories namely Men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Women’s wrestling.

In the previous edition (2021), Russia, USA, and Iran finished as the best teams, with nine, seven, and six golds. Japan, the team which topped in 2019, didn’t take part in the 2021 edition. It was on account of the travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, they will participate in this edition and will hope to extend their dominance at the junior level. Nonoka Ozaki is one of the strongest contenders for them.

After putting a dominant performance on the stage of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Wrestling, Indian junior wrestlers will hope to follow in the footsteps of the seniors at the World Junior Wrestling Championships 2022. The country has sent a 31-member contingent to Sofia, Bulgaria. 11 members will compete in the men’s freestyle category. While 10 members from each Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle will be seen in action. India will look to better its previous edition performance when it finished 11th by obtaining 11 medals.

The World Wrestling Championships U20 is the competition for the junior age category wrestlers between 18 to 20. It is annually organized by the United World Wrestling (UWW). The inaugural edition of the event took place in 1969. The tournament occurred twice in the years 1979 and 1980.
