Asian Wrestling Championships 2023, India: Greco-Roman results

Rupin, who performed admirably at the continental competition, took home the silver medal on the opening day of the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023.

At the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan, India finished their campaign in the men’s Greco-Roman division by taking home four medals total. On the second day of the Asian Wrestling Championships, Vikas earned the bronze medal for his country in the men’s 72 kg Greco-Roman division. 

Vikas defeated Jian Tan of China 8-0 in the bronze-medal match owing to greater technical ability. Ji-Yeon Lee of Korea was his opponent in the qualification round, and he defeated him with a technical advantage of 11-0. Vikas lost to Sajjad Imentalab of Iran 6-1 in the quarterfinals, but when Sajjad Imentalab proceeded to the final, Vikas moved on to the bronze medal match.

With this, India stands sixth in the medal table currently with the men’s freestyle and women’s wrestling events yet to commence. Iran is placed first on the medal tally with eight medals overall, including five gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. While Kyrgyzstan (7) and host Kazakhstan (8) sit in second and third place, courtesy of their three and one gold medals, respectively.

Other results from the day

On Day Two, India fielded three Greco-Roman wrestlers who were fighting for bronze medals – Sumit (60 kg), Rohit Dahiya (82 kg), and Narinder Cheema (97 kg). However, all three wrestlers were defeated in their respective matches. Sumit defeated Umit Durdyew of Turkmenistan with a technical advantage of 9-0 in the qualification round. However, he was defeated 10-0 by world champion Zholaman Sharshenbekov of Kyrgyzstan in the quarterfinals, who went on to win the gold medal. Sumit fell against Maito Kawana of Japan by a score of 14-6 in the bronze medal match. 

In the bronze medal match, Alireza Mohmadi of Iran defeated Rohit Dahiya 5-1. In the first round, Rohit defeated Singapore’s Aryan Azman with a score of 12-4 but fell to Akylbek Talantbekov of Kyrgyzstan in the second round, losing 7-1. In the 97kg division, Narinder Cheema advanced to the semifinals but fell to Uzur Dzhuzupbekov of Kyrgyzstan by a score of 9-0. Narinder Cheema lost 4-1 to Kazakhstan’s Olzhas Syrlybay in the bronze medal match.

What happened on day one?

Rupin, who performed admirably at the continental competition, took home the silver medal on the opening day of the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023. In the qualification round, he defeated Sardarbek Konushbaev of Kyrgyzstan with a technical advantage of 16-7. The Indian wrestler then defeated China’s Haifeng Zhang 3-1 and Kazakhstan’s Amangali Bekbolatov 6-4 in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. The 19-year-old Rupin was defeated 3-1 by Iran’s Pouya Dadmarz, the current U-23 world champion, in the championship match, and had to settle for the silver medal, which was his first on the international senior circuit.

Neeraj Chhikara, competing in the 63 kg division, took home the bronze medal after defeating Jinseub Song of Korea 5-2 in the medal match. After Iman Hossein Khoon Mohammadi, the gold medalist, progressed to the final, Neeraj advanced to the bronze medal match. In the 87kg medal match, Sunil Kumar, the 2020 Asian champion, triumphed over Masato Sumi of Japan to earn a bronze medal. India took home three medals on day one – one silver and two bronze.
