The 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships will take place from April 9 to April 14 in Astana, Kazakhstan. The Asian championship this year will be significant in terms of qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics in addition to serving as the annual continental championship.

The number of wrestlers each nation fields at the event will determine how many they can send to the World Wrestling Championships 2023, which are set to take place in Belgrade this September, even though the Astana meeting is not a direct qualifier for Paris 2024. The first wrestling competition for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will be the world championships.

Ten wrestlers each for the women’s, men’s freestyle, and Greco-Roman categories make up India’s full 30-wrestler quota, which also includes Asian powerhouses Japan, China, and the hosts Kazakhstan. This increases the likelihood that these nations will secure spots for Paris 2024 by allowing them to compete at the World Championships with 30 wrestlers.

A sizable squad also includes Iran and Kyrgyzstan, two other Asian powerhouses. China is expected to present a significant challenge to Indian wrestlers in Astana as it makes its four-year absence from the Asian Championships official.

Where to watch the Asian Wrestling Championships?

On the United World Wrestling (UWW) website, you can watch the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 live stream. The Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 won’t be broadcast on any Indian TV network.

Indian Wrestlers participating

Ravi Kumar Dahiya, the three-time defending Asian champion and silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, will miss the Astana competition due to an injury, but other notable athletes like Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik have decided to skip it.

India has plenty of firepower in the lineup to dazzle at the 36th iteration of the continental competition, despite the big names missing the Asian championship. Deepak Punia, Anshu Malik, Sarita Mor, Under-20 world champion Antim Panghal, and U23 world champion Aman Sehrawat are all members of the Indian wrestling team that is headed to Astana.

The Indian team for the Asian Wrestling Championships in 2023 has been chosen following selection trials held in New Delhi last month. Prior to being moved to Astana, the Asian Wrestling Championships’ men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman events were both scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India.
