Brian Ortega in UFC

At UFC on Fox 12: Lawler vs. Brown, Brain Ortega made his UFC debut against Mike De La Torre. Ortega out-battled Torre to win a first-round submission by triangle choke, which was subsequently reversed to a No Contest after Ortega tested positive for an anabolic-androgenic drug called Drostanolone, resulting in a nine-month suspension.

Brian made his comeback against Thiago Tavares at UFC Fight Night: Boetsch vs. Henderson. Both combatants put up a back-and-forth battle that culminated with Ortega TKOing Tavares in the last minute of the bout and both winning Performance of the Night bonuses.

Ortega’s winning run continued as he defeated Clay Guida through KO, Renato Moicano via submission, and Cub Swanson via submission to earn his first Performance of the Night prize.

Knocking Frankie Edgar

He then knocked out former UFC Featherweight champion Frankie Edgar to earn a title opportunity against Max Holloway at UFC 226, which was eventually moved to UFC 231 due to Holloway having concussion-like symptoms.

Max educated and dominated Ortega throughout the bout, staining Ortega’s pristine record. The bout was ended by a doctor’s stoppage at the end of the fourth round owing to the damage done to Ortega’s body.

Brian recovered from his defeat and returned to the sport 20 months later to face “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung at UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs. The Korean Zombie. Ortega outworked Jung and won by unanimous decision.

Ortega then became a coach for The Ultimate Fighter 29 with Alexander Volkanovski in preparation for the two combatants’ title bout. At UFC 266, Brian Ortega faced Alexander Volkanovski for the UFC Featherweight Championship. The competitors delivered a fight of the year candidate that was decided by the judges. Ortega was defeated by unanimous decision by the judges, however, he did win the Fight of the Night award for the fight.

On July 16, 2022, Ortega faced Yair Rodrguez at UFC on ABC 3. He was knocked out by TKO at the conclusion of the first round due to a dislocated shoulder that made him unable to continue.
