Despite Jon Jones going up a weight class, Daniel Cormier believes he will face Stipe Miocic as the bigger opponent. Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) vacated his light heavyweight championship in August 2020 and has since been putting on considerable bulk and strength in the training. Although he has yet to compete in the heavyweight division, UFC president Dana White has suggested about the bout with former champion Miocic would be a good fit for this summer.

In contrast, Miocic (20-4 MMA, 14-4 UFC) hasn’t fought since relinquishing his championship to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260. Miocic has weighed under 235 pounds in his last three fights, which makes Daniel Cormier worry if Jones will have the size edge.

On the ESPN show, DC & RC Cormier said, “I believe that this is an evenly matched fight because I’ve been in there with both of the guys. Jones has different weapons than Miocic, but Miocic has some crazy weapons himself. For a big guy, he does a lot of things really, really well, and what I believe that is interesting in the matchup also is that Jones will be the 205-pounder coming up.

“Stipe is a lifetime heavyweight, (but) Jones will be bigger because if you look at Jones now. He’s a big boy, and Miocic has been slim for a while. So a lot of different storylines playing into this one because does Stipe put on weight? Does Stipe stay small? Does Jones get smaller as he approaches the fight?”

DC thinks Jones should fight someone as good as Miocic

Many consider former two-time champion Miocic to be the best heavyweight of all time, therefore Daniel Cormier believes Jones’ divisional debut should be against someone of that calibre.

Cormier said, “I think it’s too risky. I honestly think it’s too risky to let him fight anybody else at heavyweight. What if he loses? Which is a very high possibility.”
