Former UFC Flyweight and Bantamweight Champion Henry Cejudo’s comeback has been postponed. The 36-year-old stated Thursday that an injury has forced him to withdraw from UFC 292, a pay-per-view event planned on August 19 at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Cejudo was scheduled to meet rated bantamweight Marlon Vera, a shockingly short turnaround following a failed championship shot earlier this year that had the Fight Ready athlete contemplating retirement once more. Perhaps the added burst of determination was a reaction to his defeat against Aljamain Sterling, his first defeat since 2016.

Henry Cejudo is suffering from a shoulder injury

Henry Cejudo took to social media to declare that a rupture in his right shoulder has forced him to withdraw from his UFC 292 fight in less than a month.

“August 19th is the 15 year anniversary of when Triple C won his Olympic gold medal. And August 19th [I] was also scheduled to fight Chito Vera,” Cejudo started his video by saying. “Guys, but I’m here to make an announcement that, unfortunately due to my right shoulder [being torn], I won’t be able to fight.”

The news of Cejudo’s injury is eerily similar to when he had surgery on his other shoulder as champion in June 2019. In that case, ‘Triple C’ was scheduled to miss the balance of the year due to surgery. Cejudo is hopeful that six to eight weeks will be enough time to recuperate this time. He stated that his ailment is a “50 percent” tear and that he is withdrawing from his forthcoming schedule to prevent escalating the situation.

Cejudo is aiming for his first victory since 2020

Cejudo returned from retirement last month, trying to reclaim his championship against current UFC Bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. He lost his championship battle to the reigning champ in a close split decision at UFC 288.

That was his first fight in more than three years. He previously retired on top, relinquishing his bantamweight belt in May 2020 following a quick victory over Dominick Cruz. The win over Cruz was his sixth in a row, with four of them victories coming at flyweight.
