In the aftermath of an unexpected upset loss to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 290, Robert Whittaker demonstrates his characteristic humility despite the defeat. Whittaker (25-7 MMA, 15-5 UFC) faced an unforeseen outcome this past Saturday when he experienced a second-round TKO loss to Du Plessis (20-2 MMA, 6-0 UFC).

The fighters squared off during a middleweight title eliminator at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Despite entering the fight as a significant favorite among bettors, Whittaker maintains his humility and composure in the face of this surprising defeat.

Robert Whittaker is not deterred by the loss

In the early stages of the fight, the former UFC champion showcased a strong start. However, as the first round progressed, Du Plessis gained momentum and ultimately dominated the bout. In the second round, Du Plessis sealed the victory, positioning himself for a highly anticipated title clash against Israel Adesanya.

This loss marked Whittaker’s first defeat at the 185-pound weight class against an opponent other than Adesanya, leaving him in a somewhat uncertain position, hovering in a state of limbo.

Despite the setback, Whittaker remains undeterred. In his first post-fight statement, he candidly admitted to falling short of his usual standard of performance.

Whittaker congratulates Du Plessis for the win

“Congratulations to Dricus – he showed up to fight, and I didn’t,” Whittaker said in an Instagram post. “But That’s the nature of the beast. You can’t have a day off. It is what it is. But I will say that I do believe that challenges and hardships and obstacles that get presented to you that you overcome, make you stronger. Build character, make you a better man and by fact a better athlete, and I will come back stronger from this.

With a track record of avoiding back-to-back losses for nearly a decade, the 32-year-old Whittaker is determined to swiftly move past this outcome. Rather than dwelling on the result, he aims to return to the octagon this year, seeking to regain momentum and embark on the process of rebuilding his career.

“I’ll come back hopefully by the end,” Whittaker said. “I want to get in the octagon by the end of the year, to get in there and close the year on a win and bering back ‘The Reaper’ you guys know.”
