Paulo Costa explained: I think the winner between me and Khamzat will be next in the line for the title shot.
The anticipation for Paulo Costa’s return to the Octagon at UFC 294 in October is growing. The former middleweight title challenger is not holding back in his predictions for his upcoming showdown against arch-rival Khamzat Chimaev. With confidence in his abilities, Costa has promised a “savage” victory over Chimaev, envisioning another stoppage against the undefeated finisher.
Costa, currently ranked seventh in the middleweight division, has been inactive since his main card appearance at UFC 278 in August. During that event, he secured a closely contested unanimous decision victory against former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold.
On the opposing side of this matchup, we have Chimaev. Hailing from Chechnya, he has garnered attention in the division with an impeccable professional record of 12-0. During his most recent appearance at UFC 279 in September, he impressively secured a first-round victory over Kevin Holland with a D’Arce choke submission.
Costa is highly confident in his ability to emerge victorious against the undefeated Chimaev. He predicts various scenarios where he can come out on top and firmly believes that there is no way Chimaev can win on ‘Fight Island’, the location of their upcoming clash.
Costa spoke candidly to MMA Junkie, expressing his belief that Khamzat stands no chance of winning the fight. With complete honesty, he confidently predicts an intense and explosive battle, showcasing his best skills and determination.
Furthermore, according to Costa’s belief, the winner of this intense battle will secure a shot at the title. “In my opinion, the victor in this fight will be granted the first opportunity for a title shot,” Costa affirmed. “I believe that the winner between Khamzat and myself will be next in line for a chance at the championship.”
Costa’s journey back to contention has faced numerous setbacks. After his defeat against two-time division champion Israel Adesanya in his initial title challenge in 2020, he experienced consecutive losses to the Italian contender Marvin Vettori. However, Costa’s determination remains unwavering, as he recently secured a victory over Rockhold and is now resolute in achieving a decisive triumph against Chimaev, thereby reclaiming his position at the top of the middleweight division.
