Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje are set to collide in a highly anticipated showdown for the vacant “BMF” title, a championship that holds great significance in the eyes of fans. The thrilling matchup between Poirier and Gaethje will take center stage as the main event of UFC 291 later this month.

While the BMF belt holds symbolic value, it was left vacant by former champion Jorge Masvidal, who retired from MMA following his loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287. In response to Masvidal’s retirement, the UFC made the decision to reintroduce the belt for this upcoming clash, much to Masvidal’s delight.

Jorge Masvidal on board with the contenders

With just a couple of weeks remaining until what could be the most monumental fight card of the year, the former champion of the BMF title, which will be up for grabs in the main event of UFC 291, has shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated rematch between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier. While the first encounter between the two fighters took place without a title at stake, this time the BMF strap will be on the line, adding an extra layer of excitement.

Although Poirier emerged victorious in their previous clash, the odds may favor him once again. However, fans can expect an exhilarating spectacle as both warriors display their relentless fighting spirit. The former champion is not only impressed with the booking of this fight, but also believes that Gaethje and Poirier will ignite the Octagon with their electrifying performance.

“I love it,” Masvidal said on The MMA Hour. “Keep it alive. They picked the right fighters to do it, that are going to (explicit) give their life. The first BMF fight, you got to see what it should be about: Guys trying to kill each other, and no matter what, pushing forward through. Because if the referee doesn’t stop that, I literally would have to kill Nate Diaz, because he was going to keep coming, keep coming, and keep coming. And I was more than ready to kill him. That’s what it needs to be like.”

What is the BMF title?

The inception of the BMF (Baddest Motherf****r) concept can be credited to Nate Diaz in 2019, following his victorious bout against Anthony Pettis at UFC 241. Diaz expressed his desire to defend his self-proclaimed fictional belt against Jorge Masvidal.

Seizing the opportunity, the UFC embraced the concept, introducing the promotion’s first-ever title that was not tied to a specific weight class or tournament since the Superfight championship in the late 1990s. Masvidal went on to defeat Diaz in their subsequent encounter at UFC 244, earning the distinction of being the UFC’s inaugural and, as of now, sole BMF champion.
