Cory Sandhagen’s recent victory at UFC Nashville might not have been the most thrilling for fans but he believes he made the best out of a challenging situation. Sandhagen faced Rob Font in the main event, securing a one-sided decision win that extended his current win streak to three. While the performance drew boos from the crowd due to its lack of excitement. Sandhagen had a legitimate excuse he had suffered a fully torn tricep early in the fight and is scheduled for surgery soon.

Speaking on The MMA Hour, Sandhagen addressed the situation and his approach to the fight. He acknowledged the clash between sports and entertainment in MMA and the UFC. Despite understanding the fans’ desire for flashy fights. He had to prioritize his compromised physical condition and skill advantage over Font’s grappling. Sandhagen likened it to playing basketball against Shaquille O’Neal and avoiding situations where his opponent held an advantage.

Originally slated to face Umar Nurmagomedov. Sandhagen faced a change in an opponent when Font stepped in as a replacement. Despite complications with his elbow throughout his camp. Sandhagen chose to honor his commitment and proceed with the fight. With the victory over Font, Sandhagen remains a top contender in the UFC bantamweight division.

Sandhagen’s performance may have sparked concerns about his standing in the title chase but he has already discussed the situation with Dana White. Sandhagen explained his circumstances to the UFC president. He understood his perspective and advised him to focus on healing.

Sandhagen emphasized his recent wins against tough opponents including a victory over Song Yadong and a decisive victory over Font. He believes that his performance, although not the most exciting, should not diminish his standing as a title contender. Sandhagen addressed reports of White leaving his seat during the fight. Dismissing them as inconsequential and highlighting the understanding nature of their conversation.

Sandhagen is expected to be sidelined for at least six months after surgery. The UFC bantamweight division could see significant changes during his absence. Champion Aljamain Sterling is set to defend his title against Sean O’Malley, with the possibility of Sterling moving up to 145 pounds. This could create opportunities for other contenders to vie for the vacant title.

Despite criticism from fellow fighters like Henry Cejudo, who claimed that Sandhagen’s performance opened the door for him to challenge for the bantamweight strap. Sandhagen remains confident in his abilities and his path to the title. He believes that when he returns, he will be the next in line to compete for the championship.
