Unexpected turns and twists have had fans on the tip of their seats throughout the UFC middleweight division in 2023. As the division undergoes constant changes, it’s impossible to ignore the extraordinary events that have unfolded in recent months.

To close out 2022, the middleweight title changed hands in a stunning upset as Brazil’s Alex Pereira, known for his kickboxing skills, delivered a remarkable knockout victory over his long-standing rival, Israel Adesanya. However, Adesanya sought redemption and achieved it in April at UFC 287 with a brutal second-round knockout of Pereira, sending his opponent to the light heavyweight division.

While the intense rivalry between Adesanya and Pereira commanded attention, other contenders were also vying for their shot at the title. Among them was South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis, who seized every opportunity to showcase his skills and resilience. In March, Du Plessis stopped Derek Brunson, an established top-10 contender, with strikes. This win extended his UFC winning streak to five and his overall winning streak to seven, an impressive achievement that arguably warranted a title shot. However, Du Plessis had to overcome a formidable obstacle in former champion Robert Whittaker.

Controversial verbal exchange: Adesanya’s racially offensive language leaves UFC community puzzled

In an unexpected turn of events, Du Plessis stunned the world by defeating “The Reaper” via second-round TKO at UFC 290, staking his claim to a championship chance later in the year. During Du Plessis’ post-fight interview, Adesanya entered the octagon, leading to an intense staredown and a controversial exchange of words. Adesanya’s use of racially offensive language left the community puzzled and uncertain about the champion’s uncharacteristic behavior.

Renowned fighter and analyst Chael Sonnen interpreted Adesanya’s actions as a reflection of his unwavering drive as a champion. Sonnen emphasized that Adesanya’s outburst was not fueled by money or fame but by his competitive spirit and thirst for challenges. Sonnen drew comparisons between Adesanya and other notable UFC stars, including the Diaz brothers, Conor McGregor, and Jon Jones, highlighting the unique influence Adesanya holds within the division.

Since reclaiming the title, Adesanya has expressed his desire to face Du Plessis instead of pursuing a trilogy fight with Whittaker, whom he has already defeated twice. UFC rumors suggest that the highly anticipated showdown between Adesanya and Du Plessis will take place at UFC 293 on September 10th in Sydney, Australia. Regarding the precise date of the championship fight, UFC President Dana White has been ambiguous.

Sonnen further emphasized Adesanya’s willingness to take on formidable opponents, citing his previous callouts of Yoel Romero and now Du Plessis. Despite not initially being ranked high enough to secure the fight, Du Plessis’ impressive victory over Whittaker has positioned him as a deserving challenger, aligning with Adesanya’s commitment to facing the toughest opposition.
