Former Serbian tennis player Janko Tipsarevic is known for making life difficult for any player on a given day. With a career-high singles ranking of World No. 8 - achieved in April 2012 - he has won 4 ATP World Tour titles, one ATP doubles title, three Futures, and 15 Challenger titles in his career. His best Grand Slam results have been reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2011 and 2012. The 2001 Australian Open junior winner, Tipsarevic, has achieved two victories over a World No. 1 player - beating compatriot Novak Djokovic twice. He also has 13 victories against other players in the Top 10 - four wins against Tomas Berdych, and one each against Fernando Gonzalez, Mikhail Youzhny, David Ferrer, James Blake, Gael Monfils, Andy Murray and Juan Monaco.

Tipsarevic, who began playing tennis at the age of six, won the Australian Open boys' singles title in 2001 and rose to No. 1 in the same year (and No. 4 in doubles). As a member of the Yugoslav Davis Cup team in 2001, he won all three of his matches against Poland in the Group II quarterfinals, assisting the team to a 3–2 victory. The following week, he won his first Futures title of his career in Belgrade and won his second Futures title in Mexico in 2002. In 2003, he made his ATP Tour debut in Indianapolis after winning his first ATP Challenger tournament in Germany.

Tipsarevic competed in 15 ATP tournaments in 2005, as he clawed his way into top 100. He also advanced to the second round of the Australian and French Opens. He was beaten by Dominik Hrbaty at the Australian Open, but he go past him at Roland Garros. He also made it to the third round of Wimbledon, defeating Tommy Haas and Lu Yen-hsun before falling to Thomas Johansson. He finished 2006 as the No. 2 Serbian tennis player after Novak Djokovic. Besides, Tipsarevic was ranked in the top 100 for the first time at No. 65.

Tipsarevic joined the ATP Tour full-time after winning the Zagreb Challenger in May 2007. He advanced to the third round of the French Open and the Ordina Open quarterfinals. The Serbian also reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, his best Grand Slam performance to date. He won all three of his matches in five sets, making him the first person since 1974 to win three straight five-set matches at Wimbledon. In his third-round win over Australian Open runner-up Fernando Gonzalez, he also saved a match point. He was ultimately defeated by Juan Carlos Ferrero, a former French Open champion. It propelled him to world No. 48, his first appearance in the top 50.

In October 2009, he reached his first-ever ATP final by defeating Daniel Kollerer, Christophe Rochus, Robby Ginepri, and qualifier Illya Marchenko at the Kremlin Cup tournament in Moscow. In the final, he was defeated in three sets by Mikhail Youzhny. Tipsarevic then reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2011 US Open.

He was the third seed at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur. In the semifinals, he defeated Kei Nishikori in straight sets and in the final, he beat Marcos Baghdatis to win his first ATP title in five attempts.
