Katie Ledecky, the daughter of Mary Gen (Hagan) and David Ledecky, was born on March 17, 1997 in Washington, D.C. and raised in the Bethesda, Maryland suburb of Bethesda. Jaromr Ledecky, her paternal grandfather, was born in the Czech Republic and immigrated to New York City as a student on September 8, 1947. The mother of Ledecky is of Irish ancestry. She was brought up Catholic. Ledecky began swimming at the age of six, influenced by her older brother, Michael, and her mother, who swam for the University of New Mexico. She attended Little Flower School in Bethesda till eighth grade and graduated from Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in 2015.
Ledecky achieved two national high school records in the 200-yard freestyle and two American and US Open records in the 500-yard freestyle during her time in high school swimming. Except for the 100-meter breaststroke, Ledecky concluded her high school career as the Stone Ridge school record holder in every swimming event. She trained at the Nation’s Capital Swim Club (formerly the Curl Burke Swim Club) throughout the summer of 2012 under the guidance of coach Yuri Suguiyama, a former freestyle swimmer.
Ledecky who was just 15 years old (then) made her international debut in the London Olympics 2012 and astonishingly took home the gold in the women’s 800-meter freestyle. With four gold medals, one silver medal, and two world records, she was regarded as the most decorated female athlete of the Summer Olympics in Rio 2016. Ledecky became the most decorated American female athlete at the 2020 Olympics and the first American female swimmer to take home an individual medal in three successive Olympics. She has clinched 42 medals in total in significant international tournaments, including the Summer Olympics, World Championships, and Pan Pacific Championships.
