Emma McKeon was born in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia on May 24, 1994. She belongs to a sporting background family. She is the daughter of Ron McKeon, a four-time Commonwealth gold medalist, and two-time Olympian, while her mother, Susie was also a Commonwealth Games swimmer. Her sister, Kaitlin is a national-age swimmer and paramedicine student while his brother David McKeon is also an olympian David McKeon. Her uncle, Rob Woodhouse, was a two-time Olympian.
She graduated from The Illawarra Grammar School in 2012 and moved to Brisbane the following year, at the age of 18, to train under Vince Raleigh at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. McKeon changed coaches again in 2015 and began training with Michael Bohl, first at Brisbane’s St Peters Western Swimming Club. She then moved to Griffith University on the Gold Coast in 2017 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in public health and health promotion with an emphasis in nutrition.
McKeon tied Ian Thorpe for the most Olympic gold medals won by an Australian athlete in 2021, with five overall gold medals gained during her first two Olympic Games. She was also the highest-scoring athlete, male or female, at the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup, winning fourteen medals, ten of which were gold. In the 4×100 meter freestyle relay, she holds four world records, one current and three previous. She has also collected 17 medals, including four gold medals in the World Aquatics Championships and a record of 20 medals, including 14 gold, at the Commonwealth Games.
